What was announced
On 17 September, Sam’s Club announced expanded AI and machine-learning targeting capabilities for advertisers. It described a P&G Cascade Platinum Plus test using predictive models to find prospective customers and estimate their later purchase value. Sam’s Club reported 2.3 times greater marketing effectiveness and 94% accuracy for a 12-month purchase prediction. This is an update about a completed test, not a newly signed AI contract.
The Retail Lab’s take
The useful question for a consumer brand is whether targeting helps acquire customers who continue buying after the first offer. An initial purchase can look encouraging while the cost of reaching that shopper makes the campaign unattractive.
A prediction of future value can help choose an audience, but a prediction and a business result are different things. We would compare actual later purchases with the forecast, then ask whether the campaign caused additional purchases that would not otherwise have happened.
What another brand should measure
Agree on the business measure before selecting the tool. Include the cost of media, discounts, product and fulfillment where relevant. Follow new customers through subsequent purchases and returns.
Use a comparable group that does not receive the new targeting approach where practical. That comparison helps distinguish campaign effects from customers who already intended to buy. A brand should also check how membership data can be used, which markets are covered and how performance changes when the model encounters unfamiliar shoppers.
Read the headline carefully
The release does not provide enough detail about the definition of marketing effectiveness, the comparison or full campaign costs to convert the headline into a profit estimate. The reported multipliers should stay attached to this particular test. They are not a forecast for another brand.
