Vinasoy: Faster shelf checks, fewer stockouts

An AI deployment connects shelf photos to faster action. The useful question is how the information reaches the people who can fix the gap.

What was announced

Vinasoy is a Vietnamese soy milk producer. In a 29 September release, AWS reported that Vinasoy deployed AI retail monitoring with Renova Cloud. Sales staff upload display photos; Amazon SageMaker supports product recognition and Amazon Bedrock evaluates displays. The release reports a 20% reduction in out-of-stock rates over two months and display scoring in one to two days, versus more than 20 previously.

The Retail Lab’s take

For a consumer brand, an empty shelf can mean a missed purchase even when the warehouse has stock. This example suggests a useful place to investigate: the time between noticing a shelf problem and getting it corrected.

Faster analysis is only one part of that process. A useful operating design would also identify the person responsible, show which outlet and product need attention, record what was done and check whether the same problem returns. Those are our proposed requirements for a comparable project, not additional claims about Vinasoy’s system.

What another brand should check

Start with one market and a small product range. Check whether field photographs are clear enough, outlet and product identifiers are consistent, and the sales team has authority to address the problems found. Compare the AI review with human checks on photographs that were not used to develop the system.

Measure both the accuracy of the alerts and what happens after them: time to correction, repeat gaps and product availability. If sales are measured, account for promotions, seasonality and changes in distribution. A monitoring tool should earn its place through better decisions and follow-through.

What the announcement does not establish

The reported change does not establish what another brand would achieve or how much extra profit it could make. Costs, the starting out-of-stock rate and a controlled comparison were not disclosed in this release. We would need those details before treating the result as an investment case.
